BACKGROUND
The topic of paper three will be derived from the 2015 documentary film, Where to Invade Next. Moore contemplated the subject matter of this film since the age of 19 (he is now 62), when he got his first Youth Hostel card and Eurail Pass. As he traveled across Europe, he was struck by the fantastic ideas he encountered, and when he broke his foot hiking in Sweden, he was in awe of the free medical treatment he received.
ASSIGNMENT
If you could choose ONE of the ideas that Moore researched and presented in the film, which idea would you like to see implemented in the U.S.? Why? You will summarize what Michael Moore shares in the film about the country's policies and then you will share/compare that to your own research regarding the corresponding American policies.
Your Introduction: Start your introduction with an interesting "hook" to reel your reader in. An introduction can begin with a rhetorical question, a quotation, an anecdote, a concession, an interesting fact, or a question that will be answered in your paper. The idea is to begin broadly and gradually bring the reader closer to the main idea of the paper. At the end of the introduction, you will present your thesis statement.

Your Thesis: (Consider trying out this Thesis Generator!)
Body Paragraphs:
These are your supporting paragraphs. Remember that the thesis statement is a kind of "mapping tool" that helps you organize your ideas, and it helps your reader follow your argument. In this body paragraph, start with an assertion, then include any evidence–a quotation, statistic, data–that supports this first point. Explain what the evidence means. Show the reader how this entire paragraph connects back to the thesis statement.
Continue this model for subsequent paragraphs for as many points as you need to make.
Your strongest point to your argument should be revealed in the final body paragraph. Also, if it's appropriate, you can address and refute any opposing viewpoints to your thesis statement here. As always, include evidence–a quotation, statistic, data–that supports your strongest point. Explain what the evidence means. Show the reader how this entire paragraph connects back to the thesis statement.
Your Conclusion:
In a sense this is a comparison and contrast essay combined with an argument essay in that you must investigate and compare the same policies in the United States with that of the country that you choose. You are required to find ONE source to provide information about the policies in the United States. Your information about the policies in the country you choose will come from the film only. You will include this source (printed out or linked or sent via Google Docs) when you turn in your final paper. Final file name should be: Last name, WTIN, class time
You must choose one of these themes to work from-- you canNOT write about more than one country OR more than one idea from one country.
FILM THEMES
Moore and team travel abroad to investigate many of the policies working so well on foreign soil. Here we list their take-aways from each of the countries they invade:
FINDING YOUR SOURCE
This is an area I will be fairly strict about-- you only have to find and utilize ONE (and only one) source for this paper, so I expect it to be a good one, meaning it is very important that you read and understand the assigned readings, "Introduction to Research" and Chapter 22 "A Brief Guide to Writing a Research Paper" in your textbook, particularly p. 616-617. Your source should be academic, not an opinion piece, and not a link for a law website explaining U.S. policies. You have until April 5 to find your source. On this day, you will bring it to class to be evaluated with your group.
You will use MLA in-text citation to cite your source within the paper itself, and you will have a Works Cited page at the end of your paper.
Remember: Your sources will be in alphabetical order using a hanging indent with Works Cited centered at the top of a new page. Do not number, bullet point, or add any extra formatting to your bibliographic citations. It should be double-spaced without extra spaces between the two sources.
Your other source will be:
Moore, Michael, director. Where to Invade Next, IMG Films, 2015, Amazon Video, Amazon.com
PAPER SPECIFICS
Length: Final draft: 1000 words+ (not counting the Works Cited page)
Due date: Tentative: April 10
Format: Double-spaced, Times New Roman 12 point font, with a creative title. MLA format
